Gaon is a Bollywood drama, which set in the backdrop of British ruled India. Gaon is directed by Gautam Singh. The movie stars Shadab Kamal, Neha Mahajan and Omkar Das Manikpuri in lead roles.
What is freedom? What’s the price one has to pay to be truly free? Or, is anyone actually free? These are some of the big questions that the film tries to pose through the story of an undiscovered village whose inhabitants have chosen to live underground because they wanted to hide from the British. They chose a secluded spot to establish a village called Bharatgaon, away from the eyes of their English oppressors and were so successful in doing so that they aren’t aware that India has long gained independence. Enter Bharat (Shadab Kamal) whose family fled the village and established themselves in the city. Bharat somehow lands in this village that is located somewhere deep within the jungles of Jharkhand. On seeing the ‘primitiveness’ of its inhabitants, he chooses to transform it. He replaces the current chief (Gopal K Singh) and invites a bank to introduce currency, electricity and technology among other things within the village.
While the concept here is interesting, the execution is shoddy. There is more happening in the second half than in the first. Just why Bharat wants to give up his life in the big city and take on this project is not clearly explained. The way he becomes the village chieftain by winning a drinking game, too, doesn’t quite fit.
The performances are uneven by the cast. The first half sinks so hard that the second half, while interesting, cannot undo the damage. The length of the film is overbearing and the humour is weak at best. A slicker treatment would have done justice.
